Since I discovered Mame way back in 1997 I always fantasized about building a cabinet.
Mame is fun at first but quickly loses it appeal when played on your computer. It is only so
much fun using a keyboard or a gamepad. Recently I was looking to purchase some arcade
machines for my home. They would be used for my game room. They were to be more for decor
rather than something to kill much time with. A coworker had mentioned an annual gaming
auction that he attends yearly. The gaming auctioneer can be found
here. It was a rather
large auction . As I found out the first few hours were a complete waste of time. Not that
there wasn't something to be hadm, but rather that items were being bid up to absurd values.
I found that after a few hours the impatient folks with lots of money are gone. Machines
were going for much less than earlier. An average game would go for $150-$250. Unless it
was Galaga or Ms. Pac-Man. Those 2 games went for big bucks. Even towards the end they
were going for $350+. The first Ms. Pac-Man went for $950. I picked up 3 games:
Mortal Kombat II for $170
Pit Fighter for $190
1942 for $65
All of them worked......somewhat. I later found out that the sound on Pit Fighter didn't work.
Mortal Kombat II and 1942 were great. Another piece of advice if you go to one of these
auctions, bring a long heavy duty extension cord. During the preview you can plug in machines
and try them out. Bring some quarters too. Although most machines have open coin doors some
machines have them locked so you'll have to put in a quarter. During the auction the
auctioneer will plug in the machine to verify that it turns on.
After I got the machines home and found that the sound didn't work on Pit Fighter I got the
idea of gutting that cabinet and using it as a Mame cabinet.
Out to the internet I went for some searching and learning and the rest as they say is history.
